There is plenty to do for those who want to have their hands in the dirt and help the community. Here are a few of the areas where we can use help. Keep in mind to do what is convenient and enjoyable to you. Please contact us at rivercityharvestgf@gmail.com or contact us through our website by filling out our volunteer form (click here for form) to let us know how you want to be part of the growing effort!
~ Planting, weeding, watering and harvesting on donation plots in the Salvation Army garden, as well as other plots set aside for Meals on Wheels and the Cascade County Food Bank. Any or all of the above projects are needed throughout the season. For anyone who hasn’t been to Meals on Wheels, there’s a huge sense of satisfaction dropping off veggies they’ll use to feed the appreciative seniors who know what good food is!
~ Website maintenance and social networking guru. If you’re familiar with WordPress, or are a frequent Facebook visitor we could use your help to keep everyone up to speed on what’s going on in the gardens.
~ Construction team. We’d like to build additional elevated beds, a screened in gazebo and a tool shed (or two). There are also little projects that arise from time to time. If anyone is handy with irrigation or other similar projects we’d love to have you on board, too.
~ Haulers. There are many times when we need willing folks with pickup trucks to pick up lumber, equipment or compost for us. If you’re available and willing, please let us know. (We can call you if we have something we need to have picked up to see if it works in your schedule.)
~ Pulp and coffee pickup. There are several businesses around town who have pulp from juicing, as well as coffee grounds available. They’re fantastic for the gardens, but we need willing people to pick them up and deliver them to the proper gardens.
~ Compost crew. One of our goals is to have functioning compost bins in each of the gardens, but it takes a crew of dedicated individuals to make sure the proper materials are being used and it’s being cared for to ensure the best result.
~ Vermin posse. Do you like to match wits with gophers? Then we need you! We’re looking for innovative volunteers who like to find ways to keep the little darlings out of the lettuce patch. We also do have traps, and need to have people who are willing to check them.
~ Grant writer. We’re an official non-profit, and need someone who knows how to access and fill out applications for grants and other available funds.
~ Project coordinators. We’re working on offering more educational opportunities for our members, and need people to help coordinate the events. Are you good at planning potlucks or setting up a few tables with information? Or if you have a talent for decorating, we could use your help.
Hi-
I work for MSU’s college of nursing here in beautiful Great Falls and some faculty were looking for a community project to get involved with. I suggested helping with harvest at the community gardens.
Could you use some help and if so where could I direct folks where maybe they could be helpful?
Thank you soooo much for what you do.
Teresa
