MAFB Watering System

Nothing could make the gardener’s at MAFB happier than having a watering system installed. For our gardener’s who had plots are inaugural year, they remembering dragging up to 200 feet of hose through the paths (always having to be careful not to encroach on another plot) to water their garden.

And then there were the busy times, when everyone would get off of work and rush to their plot to water.  However we only had two long hoses, all for 42 plots, which often meant a wait.  Needless to say, the watering situation was the most frustrating aspect of gardening last year (with weeds a close second…)

With just as high an interest last year from our base residents RCH knew that we needed to make the 2014 gardening season even better.  With GRO1000 grassroots grant money from Scott’s Miracle-Grow we were able to purchase all the supplied needed to install a watering system.

After receiving the money from Scott’s Micacle-Grow, we contacted Glenn from Ace Hardware.  Wow, what a help he was!  Sophia, one of our board members and an architect had designed a layout for the watering system, but that’s where our knowledge ended.  Glenn advised us on the right line, spigots and tools needed.

When our order came in Glenn pre-assembled our spigots to facilitate the installation.  Our MAFB gardener’s answered the call for manpower and came out for installation.  It was on Glenn’s day off but he came and supervised/worked with us on the installation.  Ace Hardware was kind enough to donate some tools that helped make the job easier.

When all was said and done, we laid about 400 feet of watering lines (buried) and installed 12 spigots, providing a close water source approximately every 3rd plot.  It’s going to be a great gardening season at MAFB garden’s!
